Every Building on Fifth

Originally a rental building built in 1928 to designs by Emery Roth, 1200 Fifth Avenue was converted to a condominium residence in 2004. Somewhat overshadowed by the Mt. Sinai complex, it is enlivened by trickles of Spanish Renaissance ornament.

1190 Fifth Avenue houses the Mt. Sinai Executive Health Program, one of the most celebrated such in the country – save, rather obviously, for architectural reasons.  A graceless hulk, it is connected to a vast and even unsightlier tower that stands behind it and which manages to completely disrupt the surrounding skyline.

An astonishing tour-de-force of red terra cotta, the Barbey Building at 15 West 38th Street was built in 1909 to designs by Delano & Aldrich, a firm better known for subdued Colonial Revival work.  Here they produced a startling early skyscraper design that terminates with a vast Baroque cartouche.
