A unique Gothic-Normandy mish-mash from Warren & Wetmore, 580 Fifth Avenue is also known as The World Diamond Tower. Located at the gateway to the block-long Diamond District on West 47th Street, it is an imposing if eccentric presence. The building is currently under renovation.
A Kohn Pederson Fox recladding of an Emery Roth original, 579 Fifth Avenue is a glammed-up version of the classic white-brick commercial block that the latter firm turned out by the dozen in the post-war period. Although the Howard Building at 576 Fifth Avenue is missing its original street-level columns and topmost cornice, it is still a handsome survivor from the district’s Edwardian days.
575 Fifth Avenue is a graceless PoMo lump. Recent storefront changes actually improve the façade by somewhat lightening the overall tonnage of puce granite.
