651 Fifth Avenue, Cartier’s, The Morton Plant Mansion

The largest mansions left intact on Fifth Avenue south of Central Park and one of the grandest of its type ever constructed, the Morton Plant Mansion at 651 Fifth Avenue was designed by the British-born Robert W. Gibson, best known as an ecclesiastical architect whose other major New York City work  is the astonishing Church Missions House on Park Avenue South.  Finished in 1905, the same year as its distinguished neighbor to the south, 651 Fifth Avenue has served as a home to Cartier’s since 1917, when the Plants sold the jeweler the house for $100…and a double-strand pearl necklace then valued at $1 Million.

The building, a New York City Landmark, is currently under renovation; we’ll take another look when the scaffolding is down.
