The 107th Infantry Memorial

Charging down the length of East 67th Street, the 107th Infantry Memorial commemorates the members of the 107th New York Infantry Regiment, famed as the “silk stockings” regiment and mustered largely from the blue-blooded sons of the district’s leading citizens.  Better known for their lavish Victorian lair on Park Avenue, home to some of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s greatest interior designs, the Regiment was active in the suppression of numerous riots in New York history, including the Draft Riots of 1863, and participated in World War I and subsequent conflict under Federal authority.

Designed and sculpted by Karl Illava, who served with the regiment during World War I, the memorial was installed in 1927.

The Regiment itself was formally deactivated in 1993.
